Turtles tagging project

Every summer, the strait of Messina is not only frequented by cetaceans and sword-fishes but also by a great number of loggerhead i turtles and rarely leather-back turtle liuto (Dermochelis coriacea) crossing this important part of sea. So many turtles have been observed that Necton has started a turtle tagging program. Such a project consists in an absolutely painless capture, carried out by means of special safe, the nets, the identification, the photo and the tagging. In 2004 Necton has planned to start using satellite marks with the purpose to know the habits, the migratory itineraries and the places where these wonderful animals lay their eggs. Moreover, in defence of the turtles, Necton collaborates with the WWF and with study of the cetaceans of the strait (S.C.S) recovery centre where the turtles showing problems, due to collisions with the boats, or found tangled in the nets or hooked, are operated, kept in a cowshed and later released.
